Füchschen Alt Is First Brewed in Düsseldorf

In 1848, the beer later known as Füchschen Alt was first brewed at the house on Ratinger Straße 28 in Düsseldorf. Brewing at the property may have older roots: the brewery states that beer had been made there since 1640, and the house was already associated with the name “Im Füchschen.” The year 1848, however, marks the documented beginning of its enduring Altbier tradition. Füchschen preserved Düsseldorf’s top-fermenting brewing culture and became one of the city’s defining Altbier house breweries. The fox displayed on the building served as a recognizable emblem in an era before standardized house numbering and eventually gave the brewery and beer their name. Although the brewery was later interrupted by war and destroyed during the Second World War, the König family reopened it in 1950, continuing the Füchschen Alt tradition at the historic Old Town site.
