The Germania Brewery Opens in Colonial Qingdao

In 1903, German and British investors established the Germania-Brauerei in Qingdao, then the administrative center of Germany’s leased territory at Jiaozhou Bay. German-trained brewers and imported technology produced European-style beer initially aimed largely at colonial consumers. The brewery later passed through Japanese and Chinese control and became associated with Tsingtao beer. Its founding illustrates how brewing technology, consumer markets, and imperial power interacted in the creation of China’s modern beer industry.
