Tre Fontane Becomes An Authentic Trappist Product
In May 2015, the beer brewed by the monks of Tre Fontane Abbey in Rome was recognized as an Authentic Trappist Product. The recognition made Tre Fontane the first Italian Trappist beer and added an eleventh official Trappist beer producer to the small international group of abbey breweries carrying the ATP label. Tre Fontane’s flagship beer is a strong golden Tripel brewed with eucalyptus leaves, an ingredient linked to the abbey grounds and to the monastery’s older production of eucalyptus-based liqueur. Its recognition broadened the geography of Trappist beer beyond the traditional Belgian and Dutch centers while still following the ATP model of production within or near a Trappist monastery, under monastic supervision.
