InBev Acquires Anheuser-Busch
On November 18, 2008, InBev completed its $52 billion acquisition of Anheuser-Busch, creating Anheuser-Busch InBev. The transaction placed Budweiser, Bud Light, Stella Artois, Beck’s, and numerous regional brands within a single international group. Regulators did not treat the combination as competitively neutral. The United States required divestiture of Labatt’s American business because of concerns in several upstate New York markets, illustrating how global mergers could produce specific local competition problems.
