Nigerian Brewery Produces Star Lager in Lagos

In June 1949, Nigerian Brewery Limited began producing Star Lager at Iganmu in Lagos. The company combined capital from trading firms with Heineken technical assistance, creating a locally manufactured lager intended to substitute for imported European beer. Star’s launch was a major step in Nigeria’s industrial brewing economy, though it did not begin Nigerian alcohol production or erase long-established indigenous drinks. Its production joined colonial commercial networks, technical transfer, local employment, and marketing ideas about modern urban consumption.
