Michael Owens Develops the Automatic Bottle-Making Machine
In 1903, Michael J. Owens developed the first commercially successful fully automatic bottle-making machine in Toledo, Ohio. Working with financial backing from glass manufacturer Edward Drummond Libbey and assistance from a team of engineers, Owens created a machine that automatically gathered molten glass, formed it in molds, and produced bottles at a rate far beyond traditional hand-blowing methods. The Owens machine made standardized glass bottles cheaper and available in far greater quantities. For breweries, this supported the expansion of mechanized filling lines and large-scale bottled-beer distribution, particularly when combined with reliable closures such as the crown cork. The invention transformed the glass-container industry and helped make the returnable glass bottle one of the defining packages of twentieth-century beer.
