David G. Yuengling Establishes the Eagle Brewery in Pottsville

Breweries

In 1829, German immigrant brewer David G. Yuengling established the Eagle Brewery on Centre Street in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. The new brewery began operating in a community whose growth was closely connected to the surrounding anthracite coal industry. A fire destroyed the original Centre Street brewery in 1831, and the business subsequently moved to Mahantongo Street, where its historic brewing complex developed. Renamed D. G. Yuengling & Son in 1873, the family business continued operating across successive generations and became recognized as the oldest operating brewing company in the United States.
