The 3 Fonteinen Tradition Begins in Beersel

In 1864, Jacobus Vanderlinden and his wife, Joanna Brillens, opened an inn in Beersel at the site now known as Hoogstraat 13. Current research by 3 Fonteinen traces the origins of the enterprise to at least this year, replacing the frequently repeated but insufficiently supported foundation date of 1887. The inn developed an associated beer-blending business and served beers from the local Lambic tradition, including Lambic, Faro, and Kriek. Jacobus and Joanna’s son Jan-Baptist Vanderlinden later continued the business. The establishment eventually became known as In de 3 Fonteinen and formed the historical foundation of the modern 3 Fonteinen Lambic brewery and Gueuze blendery.
